Read the twelve lines slowly, and stop at every line that says something you truly believe about friendship. Underline only those.

Sample answer (lines commonly underlined):
  • “May my friendships always be / The most important thing to me.” — because friends matter more than things.
  • “With special friends I feel I'm blessed” — because a good friend really does feel like a gift.
  • “I'll try all that a friend can do / To make their wishes come true.” — because a friend should act, not only feel.
  • “But love my friends the way they are.” — because a real friend does not ask you to change.
Why the poet says it this way: Every pair of lines rhymes (be–me, blessed–best, share–care, see–be, afar–are). The rhyme makes the prayer easy to remember, like a shloka or a bhajan.

When you speak, use this three-step frame: read the line → say what it means → give one example from your own life.

Sample answer: I underlined “But love my friends the way they are.” It means that we should accept our friends with all their faults, and not keep trying to change them. My friend Salim speaks very slowly and some children laugh at him, but that slowness is a part of him. If I ask him to change it, I am not really his friend.

Count the hands for each line and report the winner in one sentence, with the reason your group gave.

Sample answer: In my group of five, four of us underlined the last line — “But love my friends the way they are.” We chose it because everyone in the group had at some time been told to change something about themselves, and we all felt that a true friend should never do that.
Why this task is worth doing: When the same line is chosen by many people, it usually means the poet has said something that everybody feels but few can put into words. That is exactly what good poetry does.
