Sources of water
Rain; rivers, streams and canals; ponds, lakes and tanks; wells, hand pumps and tube wells (groundwater); springs; melting snow from the Himalayas; the sea (salty, and therefore not fit for drinking without treatment).
Without water there cannot be any life
About two-thirds of the human body is water. We need it to drink, cook, bathe and clean. Crops die without irrigation; cattle, birds, fish and trees all perish. The drying stream in the picture shows what happens to every living thing around it.
Value of water and the need to save it
Only a very small part of the earth's water is fresh and usable, and it is not replaced quickly. In many villages and towns women and children walk long distances for a few pots. A tap left running, as in the picture, wastes in minutes what someone else must walk an hour to fetch.
Simple ways to save water at home and at school: close the tap while brushing your teeth or soaping your hands; take a bucket bath instead of a shower; mend leaking taps at once; reuse the water in which vegetables or rice were washed to water plants; harvest rainwater from the roof; water the garden early in the morning so that less evaporates.

How to make a poster that works:
One idea only. A poster is read from a distance in three seconds, so do not crowd it with sentences.
A big slogan in the upper half, in thick capital letters.
One strong picture — a dripping tap counted in falling drops, half the earth as a water drop, or a child and a plant sharing one glass.
Two or three colours only — blue for water, green for life, black for the letters.
One small line at the bottom telling people what to do: “Close the tap while brushing.”

Why a slogan is short: Notice that every slogan above is under eight words and most of them use rhyme, repetition or a play on words. That is what makes a line stick in the reader's memory long after he has walked past the poster.
