Q1.

Write two words that come to your mind when you think of friendship.

Answer

Any two words that name a feeling or a quality of friendship are correct.

Sample answer: trust and laughter.

Other good choices: sharing, support, care, loyalty, hope, honesty, company, kindness.

Tip: Pick words you can explain in one line — “trust, because I can tell my friend a secret and it stays a secret; laughter, because we laugh at the same silly jokes.”

Now, find some more words that are related to friendship from the grid given below. You can search horizontally or vertically. There are eight words. One word has been marked as an example. The first letter of each word has been given in bold.

All eight words describe a friend: a friend brings you laughter, is helpful, loyal, loving and caring, and gives you hope, trust and support. Keep this list — you will need these very words in the ‘Let us speak' task on page 68.

Why this activity comes before the story: Mario's grandfather uses these very words — “I'm sure many of them are nothing more than companions or partners.” The whole story is about the difference between a companion, a partner, a classmate and a real friend.

There are so many words for a friend. What do you call ‘a friend’ in your own language?
