Why did the farmer hug Buntee?

The farmer hugged Buntee because Buntee was his own lost dog and he was overjoyed to find him again.

The moment he saw the dog he called him by name — “Buntee,” he yelled — and the dog ran straight to him. He then “told the mahout that he was looking for his dog ever since he disappeared from his house. He was glad he found him now.”

Why this matters later: The hug shows that the farmer truly loves Buntee. That is why, a few days later, he is able to do the hardest thing of all — untie the rope and let the dog go back to Gajaraj.

Do you think Buntee will leave Gajaraj and go home with the farmer?

He is taken away, but he will not stay away — he will come back to Gajaraj.

Two clues in Part I point to this. First, Buntee has no choice at that moment: “The farmer tossed a rope round the neck of the dog” — he is pulled away, he does not walk away. Second, the story has already shown how deep the friendship is; the dog was fed, bathed and carried on the elephant's back within a single day.

Read on and you will see it happen: the dog stops eating at the farmer's house, the farmer removes the rope, and Buntee “stopped only when he arrived at the stable”.

Tip: For a ‘what do you think will happen’ question, always give a reason from the text. A one-word yes or no gets no marks.
