How did Surya feel about playing?
Answer
Surya enjoyed playing for its own sake, whether he was winning or losing, and whether he was good at the game or bad at it.
On the badminton court he won point after point “laughing and joking all the time”, and when the match was over he simply said, “It’s been fun.” The next day he was on the basketball court, where he “was so hopeless at it that he could not score a basket for ten minutes. Yet, he enjoyed playing the game. His happy smile never left his face.”
What this tells us about him: For Surya the pleasure lay in playing, not in the result. That is why the result — a win or a loss — could not spoil his mood.

What was it about Surya that Prabhat observed?
Answer
Prabhat observed that Surya’s enjoyment stayed the same no matter how well or badly he played.
“Prabhat kept a close watch on Surya for some days. He was great at some things, terrible at others but what was common was the enjoyment. He enjoyed everything equally.”
From this observation Prabhat drew three lessons, and the story lists them one after the other: that you do not need a scoreboard to keep a tally of your scores; that you need not worry about winning or losing; and that “what matters is trying to do well, and enjoying every moment of it”.
