What is the Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat programme all about?
Answer

It is a programme that helps children of one state meet and learn about children of other states, so that they understand that all of them belong to one nation.

Renu explains it in the text: “It is to know that we all belong to one nation and that is the bond we share. And our unity in diversity makes us the most wonderful country in the world.”

The note on page 140 adds the official aim — states and Union Territories are paired with each other, and the paired states share their languages, food, music, dance, handicrafts, sports, literature, festivals and paintings.

In this lesson: the programme takes the form of a video call. Children from Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh appear in “little windows” on a big screen and each one describes a craft of their state.

Why is this programme being conducted?
Answer

It is being conducted to bring the people of different states closer to one another and to strengthen the feeling that we are one nation.

Page 140 gives four clear reasons:

  1. To increase interaction and promote mutual understanding between people of different states and UTs.
  2. To celebrate unity in diversity and strengthen the emotional bonds between citizens.
  3. To help people develop a sense of common identity by sharing best practices and experiences.
  4. To contribute to nation building by showing how our many cultures and traditions are connected to one another.
Why it works: It is hard to dislike a place once you know a child who lives there. When Renu's class hears Priyaranjan describe Dhokra, Odisha stops being a name on a map and becomes a friend's home.
