Where these formulas come from (grid paper): draw a rectangle 5 units long and 4 units wide on squared paper. It contains 4 rows of 5 unit squares, so counting them gives 4 × 5 = 20 unit squares. You do not have to count one by one — rows × squares in a row is the same as length × width. A square is just a rectangle whose length and width are equal, so its area is side × side.
Remember the unit: area is always in square units — sq cm, sq m, sq km — because we are counting squares.
