Meena ate 1⁄2 of the chikki and her younger brother ate 1⁄4 of it. How much of the total chikki did Meena and her brother eat together?
Answer
Measure both shares with the same fractional unit, 1⁄4. Meena’s half is 2 quarters.
Total eaten = 1/2 + 1/4
= 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4
= 3 × 1/4 = 3/4 of the chikki
Answer: together they ate 3⁄4 of the chikki.

How much of the total chikki is remaining?
Answer
The whole chikki is 4 quarters and 3 quarters have been eaten.
1 − 3/4 = 4/4 − 3/4 = 1/4
Answer: 1⁄4 of the chikki is left.

Try adding 4⁄7 + 6⁄7 using a number line. Do you get the same answer?

Yes — the number line gives the same answer. Mark the unit in sevenths, jump 4 sevenths from 0, then 6 sevenths more.
