What are your observations regarding plants and animals found in various regions? Discuss your observations with your classmates.

Answer

The main observation is that the plants and animals found in one kind of region are different from those found in another kind of region. A camel is never found in the ocean and a whale is never found in a desert.

Looking more closely, three things stand out:

Each region has its own set of living things. Cactus and camel belong to the desert; deodar and yak to the mountains; fish, whale and coral to the ocean; lion, tiger and tall trees to the forest.
The living things of a region share features suited to that region. Desert plants have thick fleshy stems; mountain trees are conical with sloping branches; ocean animals are streamlined.
Even the same kind of plant can look different in different regions. Rhododendrons are short with small leaves in the windy Nilgiri hills but taller in Sikkim; camels of the hot desert have one hump, those of the cold desert two.

Why the biodiversity of a region varies: because the conditions vary — the amount of water, the heat and cold, the wind, the snow, the kind of soil. Only those plants and animals that can tolerate and survive those particular conditions are found there. Different conditions therefore hold different biodiversity.
