Look at the map given below. Try and predict what each of the rooms might be. (Museum treasure-hunt map, page 154)

Answer

Before the audio starts, use the shapes, the sizes and the neighbours of each blank room to guess. Say your guess aloud and give a reason — that is the skill being practised.

Tip: Rooms that need many visitors at once (auditorium) are drawn large; rooms that need quiet (library) are drawn small and are usually placed near the entrance so that visitors do not walk through them.

A famous museum in your town is organising a treasure hunt in the museum premises. You and your friends decide to participate in it. Upon arrival, you find that there are many other teams. Each team is given an audio guide (recorded information) and a map to the museum. Listen to the audio recording and as you listen, mark your map with the route to take to find the treasure. To help you, the names of a few rooms in the museum are given below. Now listen to the audio and mark the various rooms. [library, auditorium, weapon room, art gallery, musical instruments hall]

Following the audio guide step by step, the five blank rooms are:

4.	musical instruments hall	“From the weapons room take a left turn. You will find the world-famous Musical Instruments Section.”
5.	auditorium	“The second room to the left in this gallery will take you to the Auditorium. Hidden here is your treasure!”

The route to mark on the map: Start at the Entrance Hall → go straight into the Art Gallery → take the third door on the right into the Weapons Room → turn left into the Musical Instruments Hall → take the second room on the left into the Auditorium, where the treasure is hidden.

Rooms already named on the map (do not fill these in): Museum Shop, Decorative Art Gallery, Cafe, Museum Office, Drinking Water, Toilets, Store, and the door marked “Closed for Renovation” — which is the middle of the three doors out of the Art Gallery.

Listening tip: Direction words are the skeleton of this kind of recording — to the right of, on the left, go straight till, the first door, the next door, the third door, take a left turn, the second room to the left. Mark the map as you hear each one; do not wait for the recording to finish.
