Anju is going on a trekking trip with her family during the summer vacation. They have reached the railway station. Anju calls the tour manager for directions to the trekking site. Work in pairs and have this conversation. Student A will play the role of Anju and mark the route on the map given below. Student B will play the role of the tour manager. Looking at the map, give directions to reach the trekking site from the railway station. You may use phrases like the ones in the box to help you. Reading the map first: the Railway Station is at the bottom left. The road out of it runs east, past the Lassi Corner and the School, to a roundabout in the middle of the map. North of the roundabout is the Lake and Bird Sanctuary; the road that continues east from the roundabout leads to the Trekking Site at the foot of the hills. The Factory is to the north-west and the Museum to the south-east — neither is on your route.

What makes this a good performance: Anju must actually trace the route on her map while listening, and check back (“Is that the small blue shop?”). The tour manager must use landmarks, not just left and right — a stranger cannot count turnings but can spot a school or a lake.
Tip: Give directions in the order the traveller will meet them, and never give more than two instructions in one breath. Pause so that the listener can say “Yes, got it.”
