How many kilograms is 5 g?
Answer
1 kg = 1000 g, so 1 g = 1⁄1000 kg = 0.001 kg 5 g = 5⁄1000 kg = 0.005 kg
Why it happens: 5 thousandths has no tenths and no hundredths, so both those places must be filled with zeros: 0.005 kg.

How many kilograms is 10 g?
Answer
10 g = 10⁄1000 kg = 1⁄100 kg = 0.010 kg = 0.01 kg
Why it happens: 10 thousandths regroup into 1 hundredth, exactly as 10 hundredths regroup into 1 tenth. The trailing zero in 0.010 may be kept or dropped — the value is the same.

Sample working for 254 g: 254 g = 254⁄1000 kg = (200⁄1000 + 50⁄1000 + 4⁄1000) kg = (2⁄10 + 5⁄100 + 4⁄1000) kg = 0.254 kg
Why it happens: g → kg divides by 1000, i.e. shifts the decimal point three places left. That is why 68 g becomes 0.068 kg and not 0.68 kg — a zero must hold the tenths place.
