Why it happens: the rule "each place is ten times the next one on its right" does not care where we start. Applying it again and again to the left gives bigger and bigger place values; applying it to the right gives smaller and smaller ones, and it never has to stop.

What will the fraction be when 1/100 is split into 10 equal parts?
Answer
1⁄100 ÷ 10 = 1⁄1000 — one-thousandth 1000 such parts make 1 unit 100 such parts make 1 tenth 10 such parts make 1 hundredth
Why it happens: a unit holds 100 hundredths. If each hundredth is cut into 10, the unit now holds 100 × 10 = 1000 tiny parts, so each one is 1⁄1000 of a unit.
