Isn’t it amazing that we humans can wonder about the wonderful world we live in?
Answer

Yes — and it may be the most remarkable thing about us. We can ask questions about things we can never touch, never visit and never bring into a laboratory, and still find the answers.

Look at what this one page has just claimed:

  • The Earth spins on its axis, which gives us day and night. Half the globe faces the Sun, half is in its own shadow — exactly what the photograph on page 5 shows.
  • The Moon revolves around the Earth, and the Earth around the Sun.
  • When one of these bodies falls into the shadow of another, we get an eclipse — the fascinating phenomenon in the first photograph.

Nobody has ever stood outside the Earth with a measuring tape to check any of this. It was worked out from patient observation: the shadow of a stick, the changing shape of the Moon, the timing of eclipses — small, ordinary observations, carefully joined together.

Why it happens: curiosity is the starting point of every discovery. The chain always runs wonder → question → observe → test → explain. Wonder is not the opposite of science; it is where science begins. That is why the book’s title is Curiosity.
Did you know? Indian astronomer Aryabhata, writing about 1500 years ago, said that the Earth rotates on its axis and that eclipses are caused by shadows — not by any creature swallowing the Sun. He reached that conclusion with nothing more than observation and arithmetic.
