Q1.
Can you name the highest mountain in the world?
Answer

Mount Everest — at about 8,849 metres, the highest mountain on Earth. It stands in the Himadri (Greater Himalayas) on the border of Nepal and China (Tibet).

  • In Nepali it is called Sagarmatha; in Tibetan, Chomolungma.
  • It is one of the ‘Eight Thousanders’ — the peaks over 8000 m mentioned in this box.
  • India's own highest peak is Kanchenjunga (about 8,586 m), in Sikkim — the third-highest in the world and also an Eight Thousander.
Did you know? Everest is still growing, because India is still pushing into Eurasia — about five millimetres a year, as you read on page 5.
