Notice the regularity of the rock-cut chambers sculpted nearly two millennia ago. How did artisans achieve such precision with just a chisel and a hammer? Picture yourself as a sculptor in that era, shaping stone into art with your own hands. What tools would you use?

Look again at Fig. 6.13.1: a whole two-storeyed row of identical doorways, identical cells and evenly spaced pillars, all cut into one hillside. Nothing was assembled — everything is what remains after stone was removed.

If I were a sculptor of that time, my tool-kit would be:

  • An iron hammer or mallet, and a heavy iron point for breaking away rock.
  • Flat and pointed chisels of different widths for shaping, and a claw chisel for evening a surface.
  • A plumb-line (a stone on a string) for verticals, a set-square and a measuring rod for repeating sizes, and cord dipped in colour for straight lines.
  • Wooden wedges driven into cut slots and soaked with water — they swell and split the rock along a chosen line.
  • Sand, water and rubbing stones for the final polish; oil lamps for working inside the dark chambers; baskets to carry away the rubble.
Why it happens: precision here comes not from better tools but from method — measure, mark, cut in stages, and repeat one standard. Iron chisels and patience will do the rest. It is the same logic a carpenter uses today.
Try This: take a bar of soap, mark a doorway on it with a pencil and hollow it out with a blunt knife, working from the top down. You will discover in five minutes why the sequence matters — stone, unlike clay, cannot be put back.
