Can we use electric current to make a magnet?
Answer

Yes. A current carrying coil behaves exactly like a magnet, and such a coil is called an electromagnet.

Why it works: we have just seen that a current carrying wire produces a magnetic field around it. A single straight wire gives a field too weak to pick up anything. But if the same wire is wound into a coil of many turns, every turn adds its own field, and because all the turns are wound the same way these fields point the same way inside the coil. Fifty turns therefore give roughly fifty times the effect in the same small region — strong enough to behave like a magnet, deflect a compass and lift iron clips.

Activities 4.2 and 4.3 are exactly this test: wind a coil, switch the current ON, and see the coil pick up paper clips and swing a compass needle.
