When is the next election in the region where you are located? Is it to the state, urban local body or panchayat?

This has a different answer in every place, so here is how to find yours reliably — and what the answer must include to be complete.
Where to look:
- The Election Commission of India announces the schedule for Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. Its website and press notes carry the dates.
- Your State Election Commission announces panchayat and urban local body elections — the chapter is clear that these are managed by the State Election Commissions, working in consultation with the ECI.
- Local newspapers, and the office of the District Election Officer, will have the announcement once the schedule is declared.
What your answer should state:
- Which body the election is to — Lok Sabha, your state legislative assembly, a municipal corporation / municipality / nagar panchayat, or a gram panchayat, panchayat samiti or zila parishad.
- When — the month and year the term of the present body ends, since an election must be held before that.
- Who runs it — the ECI for the Lok Sabha and the assembly; the State Election Commission for local bodies.
- Whether you or your family can vote in it, and in which constituency or ward.

Why elections are spread out through the year: the chapter explains that all elections take place at different times but with some periodicity, so every year several polls are conducted in various parts of the country based on when they are due. Each body’s five-year clock started when it was constituted, so the clocks are not synchronised — which is exactly why the ECI and the State Election Commissions are permanent bodies rather than committees set up once every five years.
Sample answer (replace with your own): “In our district the next election due is to the gram panchayat, in about eight months, because the present panchayat completes its five-year term then. It will be conducted by the State Election Commission, and my parents will vote in ward 4 of our village.”
