Answer
Chinna is tall. Here the word tall is in its plain form.
Only one person is in the picture. Nobody is being compared with anybody. So the adjective needs no ending at all.
Why no ending: An ending like -er or -est is for comparing. When there is nothing to compare with, the plain adjective is enough. This form is called the plain form of the adjective.

Answer
Charu is taller than Chinna. Here the adjective takes -er.
The picture shows two children side by side. Charu’s head is higher than Chinna’s. When we compare two people, we add -er to the adjective and we use the word than.
tall + er = taller
Charu is tallerthan Chinna.
Why than must be there: The word than tells us who the other person is. “Charu is taller” leaves us asking “taller than whom?” The book’s own example is: Aman is shorter than Jiya.

Answer
Jasmine is the tallest person in the group. Here the adjective takes -est.
Now all three friends are standing together. Jasmine’s head is higher than everybody else’s. When we compare one person with a whole group, we add -est to the adjective, and we put the in front.

Why the goes with -est: In a group there can be only one tallest person. The is the word we use when there is only one of something. The book’s example is: February is the shortest month of the year.
