I am taller than my brother. This one is already filled in for you in the book.
Two people are being compared — I and my brother. The word than is right there in the sentence. So the ending must be -er.
Why the book solves this one: It shows you the clue to look for. If you can see the word than in the sentence, the answer is always -er. If you can see the word the before the blank, the answer is -est.

January is the coldest month of the year.
One month is being picked out of all twelve months — that is a whole group. Also, the word the stands just before the blank. Both clues point to -est.

Compare it with the book’s own example:February is the shortest month of the year. Exactly the same shape of sentence, exactly the same ending.

Why not smallest:Smallest would mean the ant is the smallest of everything there is. That is not what the sentence says. It only compares the ant with one other animal.
Your own sentence: A sparrow is smaller than a crow.

My sister is smarter than me.
Again just two people — my sister and me — joined by the word than. So we add -er.
smart + er = smarter
Tip: Say the sentence aloud with the wrong ending — “My sister is smartest than me.” It sounds wrong at once. Your ear is a good checker.
