Hockey — rocky
The poem says, “plays the game of hockey, / even when the ground is rocky.”
Why they rhyme: Rhyming words end with the same sound. Say them aloud — hoc‑key, roc‑ky. Both end with the sound “kee”. The spelling is a little different, but the sound is the same, and it is the sound that makes a rhyme.
Tip: To find a rhyme in a poem, look at the last word of each line. The rhyming partner is almost always at the end of the line just above or just below.

The poem says, “practices on her skates, / and learns daily from her mistakes.”
Why they rhyme: Say them aloud — skates, mistakes. Both end with the sound “ayts”. Here too the spellings differ (ates and akes) but the ears hear the same ending.

Why they rhyme: Say them aloud — gui‑tar, si‑tar. Both end with the sound “taar”. This is the easiest rhyme in the poem, because the last three letters are the same too.
Tip: This pair is also the answer to Let us Think B.2 — the two musical instruments named in the poem are the guitar and the sitar.

Why they rhyme: Say them aloud — race, pace. Both end with the sound “ayce”. Change only the first letter and you go from one word to the other.
Did you know?Pace is a New Word on page 68. It means the speed at which you move. Shabana’s fastest pace is the quickest she has ever cycled.
