Both patterns are made with the same simple tile — a rectangle that is twice as long as it is wide.

The repeating unit is a square made of two rectangles. These squares are laid by turns:
The repeating unit — two sleeping rectangles, then two standing rectangles.
First square: two rectangles sleeping, one above the other.
Next square: two rectangles standing, side by side.
Go on like this along the row, and start the next row the other way round.
To continue the pattern in the empty grid, keep sliding this pair of squares to the right and then downwards.
Why it happens: Two rectangles of the same size always make a square, whether they sleep or stand. So the squares fit together with no gaps and no overlaps.
Tip: A bigger repeating unit also works. A group of 8 rectangles (four sleeping and four standing) repeats exactly as well. The two printed patterns use the same tiles laid the same way — only the blue and green are placed differently.
