1. The oldest long-distance train of the Indian Railways is the Punjab Mail which ran between Mumbai and Peshawar. Its first journey was on 12 October 1912. It had 6 coaches: 3 carrying 96 passengers and 3 for goods. a) How many people travelled in each coach on the first journey?
Answer
Only 3 coaches carried people, and they carried 96 in all. 96 ÷ 3 = ? 3 × 30 = 90 → 96 − 90 = 6 3 × 2 = 6 → 6 − 6 = 0 96 ÷ 3 = 30 + 2 = 32
32 people travelled in each passenger coach.
Why it happens: The 96 passengers are shared equally between 3 coaches, so each coach gets one third of 96.
Careful: The other 3 coaches carried goods, not people, so we do not divide by 6.
Q2.
b) This train has been running for 106 years now. It runs between Mumbai, Maharashtra and Ferozepur, Punjab. It has 24 coaches. Each coach can carry 72 passengers. How many people can travel on this train?
Answer
We have to find 24 × 72.

24 × 72 = 1440 + 288 = 1,728
1,728 people can travel on this train.
Why it happens: Twenty-four coaches each hold 72 people, so we add 72 twenty-four times — that is what multiplying does.
Note: The English book says “106 years” here; the Hindi book says “more than 100 years”. The number of coaches and passengers is the same in both.
