About this chapter

Split a number to make a hard table easy: 5 × 15 = 5 × 10 and 5 × 5 = 50 + 25 = 75. An even number can be halved: 6 × 14 is double 6 × 7 = 42 + 42 = 84. Multiplying by 10 gives tens — 26 × 10 = 26 Tens = 260. Multiplying by 100 gives hundreds — 27 × 100 = 27 Hundreds = 2700. 10 tens make 1 hundred and 10 hundreds make 1 thousand. To multiply two big numbers, split both by place value and add the small products: 15 × 14 = 100 + 40 + 50 + 20 = 210. To divide, take away equal groups again and again. What is left at the end is the remainder .
