About this chapter

Information that we collect and count is called data. A good survey question has only one answer, so each child gives exactly one vote. While collecting, write each answer down as it comes — a short letter like M, L or A is quick to write. A table puts like with like. It has one row for each choice and one number beside it. A table is easier to read than a raw list, because the counting is already done. In a pictograph one picture stands for one thing, so a longer row always means a bigger number. Different ways of recording hold different information. Pictures of children keep boys and girls apart; pictures of golas only give the total. The counts in a table must add up to the number of people you asked. That is how you check your work.
