This is your own survey, so your numbers will be your class’s numbers. Do it like this.

  1. Frame one clear question: “Which of these do you play — chess, cricket, both, or neither?”
  2. Make four headings on a page: Only chess, Only cricket, Both, Neither.
  3. Ask every classmate one by one. Put one mark under the heading they choose.
  4. Also write B for a boy and G for a girl beside each mark, because two questions later ask about boys and girls.
  5. At the end, count the marks under each heading.

What a correct result looks like: each classmate is counted exactly once, so the four counts added together must equal the number of children in your class.

Sample answer: in a class of 30 children — only chess 6, only cricket 12, both 8, neither 4.

6 + 12 + 8 + 4 = 30
Why it happens: The four groups do not overlap. A child who plays both is counted in “Both” only, not again in “only chess”.
Tip: Write the marks as you ask, not from memory. That is exactly what Anjali and Rohan did with the clipboard.

Why it happens: The table only re-arranges the marks; it does not change them. So the table total must be the same as the class strength.

A child plays chess if they are in the “Chess but not Cricket” row or in the “Both” row. Add those two rows for each column.

Girls who play chess = (chess only) + (both)
Boys who play chess = (chess only) + (both)

Whichever total is bigger is your answer. Write Boys or Girls accordingly.

Sample answer (from the sample table above):

8 > 6

In that class, Girls play chess the most.

Why it happens: “Both” children play chess too, so they must be added in. Leaving them out would give a wrong answer.

In that class, Boys play cricket the most.

Why it happens: The “Both” row belongs to chess and to cricket, so it is counted once in each of these two answers.
Tip: Your class may give the opposite answer. That is fine — data answers change with the data.
