  • The gola beside question 1(a) → colour it yellow (10 golas, the most).
  • The gola beside question 1(b) → colour it blue (5 golas, the fewest).
  • The gola beside question 2 → colour it yellow.
  • The gola beside question 3 → colour it yellow.
  • The gola beside question 4 → girls ate red, orange and yellow the same number of times, so any one of those three may be coloured.
Why it happens: Rohan drew one child for every gola and Anjali drew one gola for every gola. So both rows of red have the same length, and counting either one gives the same number.
Check it yourself: 8 + 5 + 7 + 10 = 30. Rohan’s record and Anjali’s record both show 30 golas.

How do you know? Because the rows are drawn one below the other with pictures of the same size. The longest row has the most golas and the shortest row has the fewest. I also counted: 10 is the biggest number and 5 is the smallest.

Why it happens: When every picture stands for one gola and the pictures are the same size, a longer row always means a bigger number.

Why it happens: Rohan’s way of recording keeps boys and girls apart, so we can count just one group.
Check it yourself: 4 + 4 + 3 + 6 = 17 boys, and 4 + 1 + 4 + 4 = 13 girls. 17 + 13 = 30, the total number of golas.

Three colours are equal at the top. Girls ate red, orange and yellow golas equally the most — 4 of each.

Why it happens: When two or more rows have the same largest count, there is no single winner. All of them share the top place.
Note about the book: The question expects one colour, but the picture on page 206 gives a three-way tie among girls (4 red, 4 orange, 4 yellow). Count the girl figures in your book and you will see the same. Write all three colours in your answer.

I used Rohan’s way for most of the questions.

  • For question 1 and question 2 (most and least) either record works, because both rows have the same length. Anjali’s is quicker to read, since each picture is a gola.
  • For question 3 and question 4 only Rohan’s record works. It draws a boy or a girl for each gola, so it holds one extra piece of information.
Why it happens: Anjali’s record only says how many. Rohan’s record says how many and who. A question about boys and girls can only be answered by the record that keeps boys and girls apart.
Tip: Before you start collecting data, think about what you will want to ask later. Then record enough to answer it.
