Q1.
In a particular race, 960 participants volunteered. Each boat is pedalled by 64 people. How many boats will be needed? (960 ÷ 64)
Answer
No. of boatsNo. of participantsNo. of people remaining
960
10640320
53200
10 boats hold 64 × 10 = 640 people
960 − 640 = 320 people left
5 boats hold 64 × 5 = 320 people
320 − 320 = 0 people left
Total no. of boats = 10 + 5 = 15
Remainder = 0

15 boats will be needed, and no one is left out.

Why it happens: Sixty-four people fill one boat. We keep taking away boat-loads until nobody is left.
