Why it happens: Every one of these second numbers is some tens. We multiply the easy way first and then say the answer in tens.

Q2.

Raahi spots a toy train. She figures out that each coach can seat 14 children. The toy train has 15 coaches. How many children can be seated in the toy train?

Answer

We have to find 15 × 14. Split 15 as 10 + 5 and 14 as 10 + 4.

The 15 x 14 arrangement split into 10 and 5, and into 10 and 4.

15 × 14 = 140 + 70 = 210

In 15 coaches, 210 children can be seated.

Why it happens: The big rectangle is made of four small ones. Adding the four small counts gives the whole count.
