Find Grade IV first. It is in the Primary Wing, on the right side of the map.
The red route, step by step:
Come out of the Grade IV classroom into the Primary Wing passage.
Walk up the passage till you are beside the Middle Wing classrooms.
Turn left and walk straight along the front of the classrooms, keeping the playground on your right.
Go past the Hall. The Stage is just after it, at the corner of the playground.
Why it happens: A map is a top view. Because we can see the whole school at once, we can plan the whole walk before taking a single step.

Sample answer: 3 routes. Many more are possible, so your number may be different.
Route 1 (red): Grade IV → up the Primary Wing → left along the front of the Middle Wing classrooms → past the Hall → Stage.
Route 2 (blue): Grade IV → down to the path near the Service Lane → left past the Park and the Entrance → up past the Principal Office → Stage.
Route 3: Grade IV → up the Primary Wing to the top → left past the Medical room and the Sports room → straight across the playground → Stage.
Use a different colour pencil for each route.
Then it is easy to see which line is the shortest.
Why it happens: The school has open ground on many sides, so you can go round the buildings in more than one way. Each way is a different route to the same place.

The red route is the shortest — straight along the front of the Middle Wing classrooms and then past the Hall to the stage.
Red route → 2 turns, and it goes almost straight across the school.
Blue route → it first goes down to the Service Lane, then all the way left, then up again. Much longer.
Route 3 → it climbs to the top of the map first, so it also goes a longer way round.
How do I know?
I traced each route with a different colour pencil.
Then I ran my finger along each line. The red line was the shortest.
You can also lay a thread on each line and then measure the threads.
Why it happens: A route that goes almost straight from one place to the other is short. A route that goes down first and comes back up covers the same ground twice, so it is longer.
Q4.

The MDM kitchen is in the top right corner of the map. He has turned left, so he must first come round. Here are his directions.
Come in at the Entrance and turn left.
Walk straight, keeping the Parking (Students) on your left.
Now turn right and walk up, with the Library and the IT room on your left and the Principal Office on your right.
At the Stage turn right and walk along the front of the Hall.
Keep going straight. The playground stays on your left and the Park on your right.
Walk past the Middle Wing classrooms till you reach the Primary Wing.
Turn left and walk up along the Primary Wing.
The MDM kitchen is right at the end, in the top right corner.
Why it happens: His left turn takes him away from the kitchen, towards the parking side. So the directions must first bring him back across the school before he can go up to the kitchen.
Tip: If he had turned right at the Entrance he could have walked straight along the bottom of the school and then up the Primary Wing — a much shorter way.
Q5.

Rajat is not well, so choose the shortest and straightest way.
Come out of the Library and walk right, to the open path beside it.
Turn and walk up to the edge of the playground, near the Stage.
Now walk straight across, along the playground, all the way to the right.
The Medical room is at the far end, just below the Sports room.
This way has only two turns and crosses open ground.
Going round by the Service Lane and the Primary Wing would be much longer.
Why it happens: Open ground has nothing in the way, so you can walk almost in a straight line. A person who is unwell should walk the shortest distance.
Q6.
After the assembly in the playground, Bholu must go to the IT room and Rani has to go to the sports room. Trace their paths. Which way is longer?The sight map of Preet’s school, drawn as a plan (a top view).

Bholu’s way and Rani’s way after the assembly in the playground.
Bholu’s way is longer.
Rani → the Sports room touches the right side of the playground.
She walks to the right edge of the playground and she is there. Very short.
Bholu → the IT room is on the far left of the map.
He must cross the whole playground to the left, pass the Stage, and then go down to the IT room. Much longer.
So Bholu’s path is longer than Rani’s path.
Why it happens: The sports room is beside the playground itself, while the IT room is at the other end of the school. The farther the place, the longer the path.
Check it yourself: Trace both paths with two colour pencils and lay a thread on each. The longer thread is Bholu’s.
