Q1.
Take a rectangular piece of paper and fold the paper into three equal parts and then unfold it.
Answer

Fold the paper so that it makes three equal parts, then open it out.

  1. Take a rectangular sheet.
  2. Bring the left edge over, about one-third of the way, and press the fold.
  3. Fold the right part over it and press again.
  4. Open the paper. You can see two fold lines.

Each part is 1/3 of the paper
Why it happens: Two folds cut the paper at two places, and two cuts across a strip always give three pieces.
Check it yourself: Fold the paper back. If the three parts sit exactly on top of each other, your folds were equal.

Colour any one of the three parts. That coloured part is 1/3 of the paper.

Why it happens: One part out of three equal parts is written with 1 above the line and 3 below it.
Q3.
Fold the paper back into three equal parts like before, and then fold it in half.
Answer

Fold it into three again, then fold that folded strip once more, in half.

  1. Fold the paper back along the two fold lines.
  2. Now fold the whole folded strip in half, top down to the bottom.
  3. Press the new fold and open the paper fully.

3 + 3 = 6 equal parts
Why it happens: Folding the whole strip in half cuts every one of the three parts into two, so the number of parts doubles from 3 to 6.
Q4.
Observe the colored part. What is the fraction for the shaded part now? What does this mean?
Answer

The shaded part is now 2/6. It means 1/3 and 2/6 are the same amount of paper.

The paper is now in 6 equal parts and 2 of them are coloured.
Total parts now = 6
Coloured parts now = 2
Shaded share = 2/6
The paint did not change, so 1/3 = 2/6
Why it happens: The extra fold cut the coloured part into 2 pieces and the whole paper into 6 pieces. The coloured area is exactly the same as before; only the number of pieces changed.
Q5.
Fold the paper again and check how the coloured part changes.
Answer

Fold once more. The paper now has 12 equal parts and 4 of them are coloured.

After one more fold the paper is in 12 equal parts and 4 of them are coloured.
Before the fold: 2 coloured out of 6 → 2/6
Every part is cut in two
After the fold: 4 coloured out of 12 → 4/12
And 1/3 = 2/6 = 4/12
Why it happens: Each fold doubles the number of coloured parts and also doubles the total number of parts, so the coloured share stays the same.
Check it yourself: Hold the paper up to the light. The orange strip is still exactly as wide as it was at the start.
