About this chapter
A part is a fraction of the whole only when all the parts are equal in size. Two equal parts give halves (1/2). Four equal parts give quarters (1/4). Three equal parts give thirds (1/3). The more people share one thing, the smaller each share becomes: 1/2 is bigger than 1/3, and 1/3 is bigger than 1/4. All the equal parts put back together make one whole: 5 pieces of 1/5 make 1 whole dhokla. Equal pieces can be joined: two 1/4 pieces make 1/2, and two 1/8 pieces make 1/4. We can also take a fraction of a group of things: 1/4 of 8 diyas is 2 diyas.
