Each picture is a rectangle cut into 9 small boxes, and every box is cut by one line into 2 equal triangles. So each picture has 9 × 2 = 18 equal triangles.

Why it happens: In picture (a) the green covers everything above the long slanting line, which is exactly half the rectangle. In picture (b) three whole boxes out of nine are green, and 3 out of 9 is one-third.
Tip: Count in whole boxes first, then add the half boxes. In picture (a) that is 3 whole boxes and 3 half boxes.

  • (a) There are 6 hexagons of the same size. 2 are orange and 4 are blue, so blue is 4/6.
  • (b) The two lines through the middle cut the picture into 8 triangles of the same size. The blue diamond is made of 4 of them, so blue is 4/8 — exactly half.
  • (c) There are 9 tiles of the same size. 3 are green and 6 are blue, so blue is 6/9.
Why it happens: We first count how many equal pieces the whole has, then count how many of them are blue.

Cut each shape into the number of equal parts shown below the line, then colour as many as the top number says.

1. Shade 2/3 of the rectangle

The rectangle cut into 3 equal rows, with 2 rows coloured.
Cut the rectangle into 3 equal rows
Colour 2 of them → 2/3

2. Shade 4/6 of the circle

The circle cut into 6 equal slices, with 4 slices coloured.
Cut 6 equal slices from the centre
Colour 4 slices → 4/6

3. Shade 1/4 of the plus-shape

Count its small squares on the dot grid: 2 on top + 4 + 4 in the middle + 2 at the bottom = 12 small squares.

One quarter of the plus-shape coloured: 3 small squares out of 12.
12 small squares shared into 4 equal parts
12 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3
Colour 3 small squares → that is 1/4

Can you also show 1/8? Yes. 1/8 means 8 equal parts.

One-eighth of the plus-shape: one whole small square and half of the next one.

Each part = 1 and a half small squares
So colour one square and half of the next one

4. Shade 3/4 of the last shape

This shape also has 12 small squares. It falls neatly into 4 columns, each 3 squares tall.

Three of the four equal columns are coloured, which is 3/4 of the shape.

Colour 3 columns = 9 small squares
9 out of 12 → 3/4
Why it happens: The bottom number tells us how many equal parts to make, and the top number tells us how many of them to colour. Counting the small grid squares makes it easy to check that the parts really are equal.
Tip: The Hindi edition of this book asks you to shade 3/6 of this last shape instead of 3/4. For 3/6 you would make 6 equal parts of 2 small squares each and colour 3 of them, which is half the shape.
