About this chapter
Height, width, breadth and depth are all names for a length measurement. We make 1 m, 1/2 m and 1/4 m ropes: 1 m = 1/2 m + 1/2 m and 1 m = 1/4 m + 1/4 m + 1/4 m + 1/4 m. Small things need a small unit. A metre scale is cut into 100 equal parts, and each part is 1 centimetre (cm). 1 metre (m) = 100 centimetre (cm), so 1/2 m = 50 cm and 1/4 m = 25 cm. The same height can be written two ways: 120 cm is the same as 1 m 20 cm. The length of the boundary of a shape is called its perimeter. On a 1 cm dot grid we count the 1 cm steps all round.
