Q1.
Ramu and Shamu are using a measuring tape to measure their own height. Ramu reads his height from the tape as 120 cm and Shamu reads it as 1 m 20 cm. Who is correct?
Answer
Both are correct. Pinki is right.
120 cm = 100 cm + 20 cm
100 cm = 1 m
So 120 cm = 1 m + 20 cm = 1 m 20 cm
Pinki’s drawing: the same height written in two ways, one below the other.
Pinki draws the height twice. In the first line she calls the long part 100 cm. In the second line
she calls the very same part 1 m. The short part stays 20 cm in both.
Why it happens: 1 m and 100 cm are two names for one length. Changing the
name does not change how tall Ramu is.
Tip: To change cm into m and cm, split the number after the hundreds.
145 cm = 1 m 45 cm and 260 cm = 2 m 60 cm.
