What is the length of one bus in metres? What is the length of one cricket bat in metres?
Answer

One bus is about 15 m long. One cricket bat is about 1 m long.
Two buses stand end to end under the 30 m arrow.
15 m + 15 m = 30 m
So one bus = 15 m
Six cricket bats lie end to end under the 6 m crocodile.
1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6
So one cricket bat = 1 m
Why it happens: The picture puts the buses exactly below the whale, and the
bats exactly below the crocodile. When equal things fill a known length, we share that length out
equally among them.

How many buses would be equal to the length of two blue whales?
Answer

4 buses.
One whale = 30 m, so two whales = 30 + 30 = 60 m
One bus = 15 m
15 + 15 = 30 → 2 buses make one whale
15 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 60 → 4 buses make two whales
Why it happens: Two buses fit along one whale. So for two whales we need two
buses twice over, that is 4 buses.

How many cricket bats will be needed to measure one whale?

30 cricket bats.
One cricket bat = 1 m
One whale = 30 m
1 m laid down 30 times = 30 m
So we need 30 bats
Why it happens: Each bat covers exactly 1 m. To cover 30 m we must lay the
bat down 30 times, one after another.

If two ostriches stand one above another, their height will be equal to the height of ______________.

Equal to the crocodile — the crocodile is about 6 m long.
One ostrich = 3 m tall
Two ostriches, one above the other = 3 + 3 = 6 m
In the picture, only the crocodile measures 6 m
Why it happens: Standing one above the other means the two heights are added.
6 m matches the crocodile, and not the giraffe in the barrel, which is 4 m.
Tip: The book gives the crocodile's 6 m as a length, because a crocodile
lies flat. Stood on its tail, it would be 6 m tall.

How many crocodiles will be equal to the length of a blue whale?

One crocodile = 6 m, one whale = 30 m

That is 6 counted 5 times

it took. Five jumps of 6 m make 30 m.
