Why it happens: A figure is cut into halves only when the two pieces are the same size. The easy test is to fold along the cut — if the two pieces cover each other, they are halves.
Check it yourself: Trace figure (d) on paper, cut it out and fold along the dotted line. The two pieces sit exactly on top of each other.

(a) Four-petal flower: draw a line straight down between the left two petals and the right two petals.
(b) Five-petal flower: draw a line down through the middle of the top petal and the gap below it.
(c) Parallelogram: join the middle of the left slanting side to the middle of the right slanting side.
(d) Six-pointed star: draw a line from the top point straight down to the bottom point.
Why it happens: Each of these shapes has a line down which the two sides match. A cut along that line makes two pieces of the same size.
Tip: There is more than one right answer. For the star you can also join the left point to the right point.
