How many 250 g daal packets will balance one 500 g daal packet? Draw as many packets of 250 g on the empty pan such that it balances the 500 g packet shown on the left pan of the balance.

Keep adding 250 g packets until the two pans carry the same weight.

1 packet → 250 g — too light
2 packets → 250 g + 250 g = 500 g — equal!

So we must draw 2 packets of 250 g on the empty pan.

Why it happens: 250 g is half of 500 g. Two halves always make one whole, so two 250 g packets make exactly one 500 g packet.

Two packets of 250 g balanced one packet of 500 g.

250 g + 250 g = 500 g
So 250 g = ½ of 500 g

The blank is filled with ½ (half).

Why it happens: When two equal pieces make a whole, each piece is half of that whole. The other choice, 2, would mean 250 g is twice 500 g — and that is not true, because 250 g is the smaller weight.
Tip: In the same way, 500 g = ½ of 1 kg and 250 g = ¼ of 1 kg.
