Do you remember the 1 litre bottle? How much water does your water bottle hold?
Answer

Yes. A 1 litre bottle holds 1 l, which is the same as 1000 ml.

To find out how much your own bottle holds:

  1. Look for a number printed near the bottom of the bottle, such as ‘1 L’ or ‘750 ml’.
  2. If there is no number, fill a 250 ml glass again and again and pour it into the bottle. Count the glassfuls.
1 glass = 250 ml
2 glasses = 500 ml
3 glasses = 750 ml
4 glasses = 1000 ml = 1 l

Sample answer: My water bottle holds 750 ml. Three glasses of 250 ml filled it right up to the top.

Why it happens: Capacity means how much a container can hold. Pouring with a known measure is the easiest way to find it.

Go around your home and school, then fill in the names. A sample:

Why it happens: Everything is compared with one thing — the 1 litre mark. A container is put in the first column if it holds less than 1000 ml and in the last column if it holds more than 1000 ml.
Tip: Most packets and bottles have their capacity printed on them. Read it before you guess.

Take help from your teachers and parents to collect different bottles with different capacities—500 ml, 250 ml, 100 ml, 50 ml, and 10 ml. Try to fill a one litre bottle with the water contained in different smaller bottles.

Do the activity like this:

  1. Collect clean empty bottles of 500 ml, 250 ml, 100 ml, 50 ml and 10 ml.
  2. Keep a 1 litre bottle ready and empty.
  3. Fill one small bottle to the brim, pour it in, and make a tally mark.
  4. Go on until water reaches the top of the 1 litre bottle.

Why it happens: The 1 litre bottle always takes 1000 ml. So the smaller the bottle, the more times you must pour.
