The three balances tell the whole story.
Balance 1: whole pumpkin = one iron weight Balance 2: half pumpkin = the other half pumpkin So the two halves are equal. Half pumpkin = half of the whole pumpkin
So the half pumpkin weighs half of whatever the whole pumpkin weighs.
Sample answer: If the seller’s weight is 2 kg, then the whole pumpkin is 2 kg. 2 kg is 1 kg and 1 kg, so each half is 1 kg.
Why it happens: Balance 2 shows the two halves balancing each other. Two equal pieces make the whole, so one piece must be half of the whole.
Tip: In the book the number stamped on the little iron weight is printed too small to read. Read it in your own copy, then take half of it. Balance 3 also tells you that the half pumpkin weighs the same as that heap of green vegetables.
