Look at the pictures given and write the names of the animals from heaviest to lightest.The five animals printed at the top of page 115.

From heaviest to lightest, the animals are:
1. Elephant 2. Giraffe 3. Dog 4. Squirrel 5. Ant
Elephant, Giraffe, Dog, Squirrel, Ant.
Why it happens: A bigger body has more stuff inside it, so it presses down harder. An elephant is the biggest animal here, so it is the heaviest. An ant is so tiny that it sits on a blade of grass without bending it.
Tip: You cannot put an elephant on a balance! For very big animals we compare by size and by what we already know about them.

Write the name of the heaviest object in your home. How did you know?

This is about your own home, so write what you really find there.
Do it like this:
Look around your home and pick out the big, solid things.
Try to lift each one a little, or try to push it.
The one that does not move at all is the heaviest.
Sample answer: The heaviest object in my home is the almirah. I know it because my father and my uncle together could hardly push it when we cleaned the room.
Why it happens: A thing feels heavy when we have to pull hard against it. The harder we must pull, the heavier it is. So pushing and lifting is a way of comparing weights without a balance.

Do you carry your school bag with ease or with some effort?

Answer for your own bag. Both answers can be right.
Check it this way: pick the bag up with one hand and hold it for a slow count of ten.
If your arm does not get tired, the bag is light. You carry it with ease.
If your arm starts to ache, the bag is heavy. You carry it with effort.
Sample answer: I carry my school bag with some effort on Monday, because six books and my water bottle go in together. On Saturday only two books go in, so it feels easy.
Why it happens: More books inside means more weight. Weight is how heavily a thing presses down, so a fuller bag always presses down more.
Tip: A school bag should weigh less than about one-tenth of your own weight. Take out the books you do not need that day.

Write the name of the heaviest book in your bag. How did you know?

Look inside your own bag and compare the books two at a time.
Hold one book in your left hand and one in your right hand.
The hand that goes down is holding the heavier book. Keep that one.
Now compare the winner with the next book, and go on till one book is left.
Sample answer: The heaviest book in my bag is my atlas. I held it in one hand and each other book in the other hand. Every time, the hand with the atlas went down.
Why it happens: Your two hands work just like the two pans of a balance. The heavier side always goes down and the lighter side goes up.
Tip: A thick book with big pages usually has more paper in it, so it is usually heavier.

What is your weight? How did you know?
Answer
Write your own weight in kilograms (kg).
To find it out:
Stand on a weighing machine at home, at school or at a shop.
Keep both feet on it and stand still.
Read the number that shows up. That number is your weight in kg.
Sample answer: My weight is 28 kg. I stood on the weighing machine in our health room and the screen showed 28.
Why it happens: A weighing machine does the comparing for us. It shows the weight straight away as a number, so we do not need to guess.
Tip: Most Class 4 children weigh between about 25 kg and 35 kg. If your answer is far away from that, check that you read the machine correctly.
