The picture in the book: a small pond with a flock of 25 white geese standing on the left and 12 sheep standing behind a fence on the right. Each goose has 2 legs and each sheep has 4 legs.
Check it yourself: Count in 9s — 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99, 108, 117, 126. That is 14 nines.
Q4.
Surya is making a patch work with beads of two colours as shown in the picture.Surya’s patch work of golden and white beads. How many beads has he used? How many each of golden colour beads and white colour beads has he used in making this patch work?
Answer
Surya’s patch work. The beads are laid in blocks of 4, golden and white by turns.
Surya has used 160 beads in all — 80 golden and 80 white.
Count one row: 16 beads Count the rows: 10 rows Total beads: 16 × 10 = 160
In every row the colours go 2 golden, 2 white, 2 golden, 2 white … So each row has 8 golden and 8 white beads. Golden: 8 × 10 = 80 White: 8 × 10 = 80 Check: 80 + 80 = 160
Why it happens: The beads are set in a neat array, so counting one row and the number of rows is enough. The two colours take equal turns, so they split the total in half.
