Why it happens: Every row has the same number of saplings. So 3 equal rows of 12 can be added as 12 + 12 + 12, which is the same as 3 × 12.

There are 16 columns of boxes. There are 6 boxes in each column. The dashed line splits the tray into 10 columns and 6 columns. 10 columns: 10 × 6 = 60 boxes 6 columns: 6 × 6 = 36 boxes 60 + 36 = 96 boxes Mathematical statement: 16 × 6 = 96
Tip: Splitting 16 into 10 and 6 is the same trick we used for the lilies. Tens first, then the rest.

The book has already drawn the first row of 6 and the first column of 3. So the tray is 3 rows × 6 columns. 3 × 6 = 18 cupcakes in one tray.
Why it happens: In an array every row holds the same number. Once we know one row has 6 and there are 3 rows, the rest of the tray must match.
