Q1.
Do you help in cooking at home?
Answer

Answer honestly, and name the jobs you actually do. A Class 4 child can do many safe jobs in the kitchen.

Safe jobs I can doJobs an adult must do
Wash fruits and vegetablesLight the gas stove
Peel a banana, shell peas, pluck corianderCut with a sharp knife
Knead dough and pat rotisLift a hot pan or pressure cooker
Mix a salad or a fruit chaatFry anything in hot oil
Lay the plates and pour waterDrain boiling water

Sample answer: “Yes. I wash the vegetables, shell the peas and make the fruit chaat. I also lay the plates before dinner. I do not go near the stove alone.”

Why it happens: Fruit chaat and vegetable salads need no cooking at all, so those are the dishes a child can make completely.
Tip: Always wash your hands before you touch food, and tie back long hair in the kitchen.
Q2.
Do you think all family members should know how to cook? Why?
Answer

Yes, every member of the family should know how to cook. Here is why.

  • Then no one goes hungry if the person who usually cooks is ill or away.
  • The work gets shared instead of falling on one person every day.
  • Whoever can cook can make fresh home-cooked food, which the book says is better than packaged food.
  • A person who cooks learns to choose a balanced meal from all three food groups.
  • Cooking is a life skill — useful when you study or work away from home.

Sample answer: “Yes. In my family my father makes tea and poha, my mother makes the dal, and I make the salad. When my mother went to my aunt’s house, we still ate properly because everyone knew something.”

Why it happens: Cooking is not one person’s job. Food is needed by everybody every day, so the skill is useful to everybody.
Did you know? A chef is a professional cook skilled in all parts of food preparation. The word ‘chef’ in French means the director or head of the kitchen.
