The two places are almost opposite. The coast has plenty of water; the desert has very little.

Why they differ: water decides almost everything. Where there is plenty of water, people fish, tall trees grow and roofs must throw off rain. Where water is scarce, people store it, plants stay small and animals must manage with very little.
