The clothes are light, thin and cotton, and often brightly coloured.
Women wear cotton sarees. In Odisha the Sambalpuri saree is famous — Chandni’s mother bought one at Puri.
Men wear a dhoti or lungi with a shirt or a light gamchha on the shoulder.
Fishermen tie their lungi up short so they can work in the water.
Why it happens: the coast is hot and the air is damp. Thin cotton clothes dry quickly and let air pass, so people stay comfortable while working near the water.
