NCERT Solutions for Class 5th Maths Chapter 14 Filling the blanks and answering (a)–(e) from the street map — Bus Route
Book page 174 Updated on2026-09-19
Q1.
The bus will start from the parking area. It will go north and then it will take a right turn onto ___________ Road driving in the ___________ direction to reach Stop 1(S1).
Answer
It takes a right turn onto Hospital Road, driving in the east direction.
Walk through it with the bus.
Step 1: The bus comes out of the parking area and drives north — up the page, along the road that runs beside Ravi's, Rohan's and Lali's houses.
Step 2: It keeps going north until it reaches the road that runs in front of the HOSPITAL. That road is named Hospital Road.
Step 3: It takes a right turn. It was facing north; turning right makes it face east.
Step 4: It drives east along Hospital Road and reaches S1, the stop in front of the hospital.
Turn the compass with the bus and the blank fills itself.
Why right means east here: "Right" is not a fixed direction — it depends on which way you are facing. Hold your book so that north is up, put your finger on the bus facing north, then swing it a quarter turn to the right. Your finger now points to the right of the page, and the right of the page is east.
Q2.
To reach Stop 2(S2), it will turn _______ (right/left) onto ___________ Road driving in the ___________ direction.
Answer
It will turn right onto Park Road, driving in the south direction.
Step 1: After S1 the bus is still driving east along Hospital Road.
Step 2: Hospital Road ends where it meets the long road running up and down on the east side. That road is Park Road — it is named after the Children's Park beside it.
Step 3: The bus turns right. It was facing east; a right turn now makes it face south.
Step 4: It drives south along Park Road, past Prem's house and Raju's house, and reaches S2 beside the Shopping Centre.
Facing north, turn right → facing east Facing east, turn right → facing south Facing south, turn right → facing west Facing west, turn right → facing north
Check it yourself: Look at the red arrows printed on the map itself. On Hospital Road they point to the right (east). On Park Road they point downwards (south). The map agrees with our answer.
Q3.
(a) Whose houses are situated to the east of Jaideep's house?
Answer
Prem's house and Raju's house.
Find Jaideep's house. It is in the middle strip of the map, in the same block as the pond, close to Park Road.
Put your finger on it and slide straight to the right. Right is east.
You cross Park Road and come to the eastern strip of the map.
The houses there are Prem's and Raju's. Prem's house is almost exactly east of Jaideep's; Raju's house is a little to the south-east.
Why not the Children's Park or the Shopping Centre: The Children's Park is to the north-east — you would have to go up as well as right. The Shopping Centre is to the south. Only Prem's and Raju's houses lie on the eastern side at about the same level.
Tip: Lay a ruler across the map through Jaideep's house, keeping it flat and level with the bottom edge. Everything the ruler touches on the right is east of the house.
Q4.
(b) Mark the route from Ravi's house to the children's park.
Answer
Here is a route Ravi can really walk. Draw it on your map with a pencil.
Step 1: Come out of Ravi's house on to the road just east of it — the same road the bus uses.
Step 2: Turn left and walk north along this road. Rohan's house and then Lali's house go past on your left.
Step 3: Stop when you reach Hospital Road — the road in front of the HOSPITAL.
Step 4: Turn right and walk east along Hospital Road. The hospital is on your left; Tinku's and Golu's houses are on your right. You pass Stop 1 on the way.
Step 5: Keep going east until Hospital Road meets Park Road.
Step 6: The Children's Park is right there, on the other side of Park Road. Cross carefully and you have arrived.
Ravi's route: two straight walks and one turn.
Another correct route: Ravi could also walk south to Market Road, east along it, and then north up Park Road. It works, but it is longer. When two routes both work, the one with fewer turns and fewer roads is usually the better one.
Q5.
(c) Which stop is closer to Lali's house?
Answer
Stop 1 (S1) is closer to Lali's house.
Find Lali's house. It is in the top-left corner of the map — the far north-west.
Find the two stops. S1 is in the north, in front of the hospital. S2 is in the south, beside the Shopping Centre.
Lali is already in the north, so S1 is the nearer one. To reach S2 she would have to walk down the whole length of the map and then across.
Lali → S1: east to the road, then east along Hospital Road. Short. Lali → S2: east to the road, then all the way south, then east. Much longer.
Tip: When two places are being compared, do not guess from the picture. Trace both walks with your finger along the roads and see which finger stops sooner.
Q6.
(d) Golu is running late. Trace the route to help him reach the nearest bus stop.
Answer
Golu's nearest stop is Stop 1 (S1) — and it is only a few steps away. His house is in the block just south of Hospital Road, and S1 is on that very road.
Step 1: Golu comes out of his front door and walks north, up to Hospital Road.
Step 2: He turns on to Hospital Road and looks across it. The HOSPITAL is straight ahead.
Step 3: The S1 stop sign is right there in front of the hospital, almost directly north of his house.
Step 4: He crosses the road carefully and waits at S1. He will be in time.
The shortest route in the whole chapter: one short walk to the north.
Why S1 and not S2: S2 is beside the Shopping Centre, far away in the south of the map. From Golu's house he would have to walk east to Park Road and then all the way down. S1 is on the road at the end of his own block, so it is much nearer.
Q7.
(e) In which direction would Prem have to move to reach Stop 2?
Answer
Prem has to move towards the south.
Step 1: Prem comes out of his house on the east side of the map and reaches Park Road, which runs along the west edge of his block.
Step 2: He turns to face south — down the page.
Step 3: He walks south along Park Road. Raju's house goes past on his left. He crosses Market Road.
Step 4:S2 is on his right, at the end of the Shopping Centre. He has arrived.
Prem's house → Park Road (a few steps west) Then south along Park Road S2 is on the right (west) side of the road
Tip: The one-word answer the blank wants is south, because that is the direction he travels for almost the whole way. The short step west at the start is only to get on to the road.
