The street map shows the bus route with dotted lines. The bus will pick up children from Stop 1 and Stop 2 marked on the map. Observe the map carefully and help the children board the bus.
The street map on page 174. The red dotted line is the bus route. S1 is Stop 1 and S2 is Stop 2.
Answer
Each child must walk to the stop that is nearer to their house — Stop 1 (S1) in the north, beside the hospital, or Stop 2 (S2) in the south, beside the shopping centre.
Read the map in four steps.
Find the direction arrow. North is up, east is right.
Find the two stop markers. The small red circle marked S1 stands in front of the HOSPITAL, on Hospital Road. The circle marked S2 stands at the east end of the Shopping Centre, on Park Road.
Follow the red dotted line. That is the bus route. It leaves the parking area, goes north, turns east along Hospital Road (past S1), turns south down Park Road (past S2) and then goes west.
For each child, trace along the roads from the house to each stop, and choose the shorter walk.

Why the dotted line matters: A child cannot walk straight across a block — houses and courts are in the way. You must go along the roads, and the bus must do the same. That is why we count the walk along the roads, not the straight-line distance.
