Q1.
The tent to the west of the road is blue.
Answer
Colour the tent at the top-left blue. It is the only tent on the left-hand side of the road.
Find it in three steps.
Look at the direction arrow beside the picture. North is up, so west is to the left.
Find the road. It is the grey strip with white dashes, curving down the picture.
Look on the left side of that road. There is exactly one tent there. That is the blue tent.
The whole camp, with all four clues done and the new tent drawn east of the lake.
Why it happens: "West of the road" does not mean anywhere on the left of the page. It means on the west side of that road. Only one tent is there — the other three are all on the east side.
Q2.
The tent closest to the lake is green.
Answer
Colour the middle tent — the one standing just above the lake — green.
Find the lake. It is the blue patch with the ducks on it.
Look at each tent and ask how far it is from the lake. The tent right at the top edge of the lake is nearest. The others are far away.
That nearest tent is the green one. It lies just to the north of the lake.
Tip: "Closest" is about distance, not direction. Put your finger on the lake and slide it to each tent. The shortest slide wins.
Q3.
The tent north of the green tent is purple.
Answer
Colour the upper tent — the one on the right of the road, near the yellow-leaved trees — purple.
Start at the green tent (the one beside the lake).
Go straight up the page. North is up, so up means north.
The next tent you meet is the purple one. It is the tent standing east of the road, higher up the picture.
Why it happens: Directions on a map are always taken from some place. Here the starting place is the green tent, not the lake and not you. So you must first colour the green tent, then look north from it.
Q4.
The tent south of the lake is yellow.
Answer
Colour the bottom tent — the one below the lake — yellow.
Find the lake again.
Go straight down the page from it. South is down.
The tent you reach is the yellow one. It stands in the lower part of the camp, east of the road.
All four tents now: West of the road → blue Closest to the lake → green North of the green tent → purple South of the lake → yellow
Check it yourself: The camp has exactly four tents and you have used exactly four colours, with no tent left out and none coloured twice. That means every clue has been read correctly.
Q5.
Now, draw a tent to the east of the lake.
Answer
Draw a new tent on the right-hand side of the lake, in the open grassy space between the lake and the trees at the right edge.
Check the direction arrow. East points to the right.
Put your pencil on the lake and move it straight to the right.
Draw a small tent there — a triangle with a little flag on top, like the other tents.
The dotted tent in the drawing above shows a good place for it.
Try this: Now write your own clue for a friend, using the same style — for example, "Draw a tree to the south-west of the yellow tent." Then check whether your friend puts it in the right place.
