Q1.
Write the directions of the following in relation to the girl. Window _____________
Answer

The window is to the north of the girl.

Here is how to read the picture.

  1. Find the direction arrow printed beside the room. N is at the top, E on the right, S at the bottom, W on the left.
  2. Find the girl. She is standing in the middle of the room.
  3. Find the window. It is the barred opening on the far wall, right behind her.
  4. The far wall is at the top of the picture, so it is the north wall. The window is therefore north of the girl.
cupboard window bed bedside table girl N S W E The room seen from above, with the girl in the middle.
Draw the room from above and every direction becomes easy to see.
Why it happens: "In relation to the girl" means we imagine standing where she stands. From there, whatever lies towards the top wall is north, whatever lies towards the right wall is east, and so on.
Q2.
Bed _________________
Answer

The bed is to the east of the girl.

  1. Look at the direction arrow. East is to the right.
  2. Look to the right of the girl in the picture.
  3. The bed is there, against the right-hand wall, with the pillow on it.
Tip: When a thing is big, use its middle. The whole bed lies on the right side of the room, so we simply say the bed is east.
Q3.
Cupboard ___________
Answer

The cupboard is to the west of the girl. To be exact, it is north-west — it stands against the far wall, on the left side.

  1. Find the cupboard. It is the tall blue almirah with two doors.
  2. It is on the girl's left, so it is towards the west.
  3. It also touches the far wall, which is north. Left and a little behind is called north-west.
Why we can say both: Between north and west there is a corner direction, north-west. Something in that corner can be described as "west" if you only want a rough answer, and "north-west" if you want an exact one. Both show that you have read the map correctly.
Q4.
Bedside table ________
Answer

The bedside table is to the south-east of the girl — that is, to the right and in front of her.

  1. Find the bedside table. It is the small round table with a glass and a bottle on it, at the foot of the bed.
  2. It is on the right of the girl → towards the east.
  3. It is also nearer to us than she is, that is towards the bottom of the picture → towards the south.
  4. East and south together give south-east. Saying just "east" is also acceptable.
Window → north
Bed → east
Cupboard → west (north-west)
Bedside table → south-east (east)
Check it yourself: Stand in the middle of your own room and say aloud where four things are. Then turn round once and say them again — the answers do not change, because north stays north whichever way you face.
